DOWO

Draw Objects With Objects

This is one course I gave for fresh students at FH-Dortmund, where I am guest-teaching this year.

I was aiming to get the students to the point where they realize a good drawing doesn´t necessarily need to be perfectly drawn to be good, it rather should offer the power of failure to make it unique and special, just like them. Skills can be trained and be replaced by any other "talent".

So I came up the idea to make them draw objects with objects. That means, they had to bring an object and dunk it into paint and draw it while holding it in their drawing hand. This isn´t the easiest way to draw something, but I also wanted them to get a feeling for the object and paint it more imaginary instead of looking at it on the table.

Since this was a course for starters I also gave the task to use hand-drawn typography, to get a feeling for the power of type and drawing.

The DOWO-course was split into 5 tasks:

1. Draw an object with this object

2. Play with the typography around the object

3. Make a big initial using the name of the object

4. Draw two objects, one with the other

5. Draw your neighbour with her/his object to build up friendships

The results are just beautiful, though the students thought it looked ugly, but maybe I reached some of them.

PS: the documentation-pics are as good as my mobile can take it, blame the hi-tec.

1. Draw an object with this object, nice.
2. Play with the typography around the object, nice.
3. Make a big initial using the name of the object, nice.
4. Draw two objects, one with the other, nice.
5. This is the people, nice.
